Snowmobiling the Big Hole Valley

250 miles of groomed trails begin at your doorstep. The Big Hole Valley gets serious snow.

Avalanche Awareness & Safety

The mountain terrain surrounding the Big Hole Valley includes avalanche terrain. Backcountry riding requires preparation and respect for mountain conditions.

  • Check forecasts: Review the Northwest Avalanche Center forecast before every backcountry ride.
  • Take a course: Complete an avalanche safety course if riding in mountain terrain. AIARE Level 1 certification is recommended.
  • Required gear: Avalanche beacon, probe, and shovel — every rider in your group must carry these items in backcountry terrain.
  • Never ride alone: Always ride with partners when venturing into avalanche terrain.
  • Plan your route: Tell someone your planned route and expected return time before departing.

Snowmobile Rules: National Forest

Riding in the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest requires following specific rules to protect wildlife, habitat, and the riding experience for everyone.

🗺️

Designated Routes Only

Snowmobiles must stay on routes designated on the Winter Motor Vehicle Use Map. Meadow riding may be permitted in some areas — check the map.

🏷️

Montana Snowmobile Registration

All snowmobiles must be registered in Montana or display a valid reciprocity permit. Trail fees may apply in some groomed trail systems.

🔇

Noise Regulations

Snowmobiles must meet USFS noise standards. Most modern sleds comply but check if yours has aftermarket exhaust.

🌿

Stay off Undesignated Areas

Avoid riparian areas, meadows posted as closed, and any area marked off-limits on the trail map. Cryptobiotic soils and sensitive wintering wildlife habitat must be protected.

🦌

Wildlife Displacement

Avoid repeatedly riding through the same meadows where deer and elk are wintering. Constant disturbance forces animals to expend critical energy reserves in deep snow.

❄️

Winter Closures

Some forest roads and areas are seasonally closed to motorized travel. Always check the current Winter MVUM.

Best Season: Month-by-Month Guide

December

Early season. Base building. Check conditions before riding — can be thin early.

January

Prime conditions typically begin. Cold, dry powder. Mountain routes opening up.

February

Peak snowmobile month. Deepest snowpack, all groomed trails running. Best backcountry conditions.

March

Still excellent. Spring sun can create corn snow in the afternoons. Rides to Elkhorn Hot Springs are ideal now.

April

Late season. Grooming ends. Can still be good at elevation. Watch for warming conditions.
